Ice Concrete, Vasily Sitnikov.
Cold Production - programming concrete openwork with ice formwork
In the first 11-week module of the second trimester of the MAS ETH in Architecture and Digital Fabrication, we will explore the potential of novel digital fabrication processes for concrete using ice as mold material to implement a full-scale project.
This project of the MAS ETH in Architecture and Digital Fabrication will explore the potential of novel digital fabrication processes based on the ice formwork method. The objective of the course is to study, design, and fabricate a full-scale demonstrator of a modular spatial concrete lattice.
Perforated concrete blocks, modeled according to geometric shapes and repeatable across a facade offer endless possibilities of surface modulation and structure. Digital manufacturing and innovative material production allow further explorations on this architectural and technological design topic. Based on research, this topic explores the novel method of concrete casting using ice. Students will explore the creative potential and interconnection of fabrication process, materiality and geometry.
Through the project, students will test how digital technologies and ice formwork can be used to create new architectural elements, based on properties of repeatability, integrated functionalities and interlocking systems.
